Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex E02 Runaway Evidence

Where is the boundary between human and machine when the differences between the two become more philosophical than physical?

Episode 2

A new model multi-pedal tank has been hacked by an unknown assailant and breaks out of the military compound. Section 9 is called in to stop the tank, which appears to be heading into suburban Tokyo.

Section 9 first try and stop the tank through brute force, but any attempts to target the tank with their satellite-linked weapons is useless as the tank can simply hack the satellites to throw their aim off.

Togusa interviews the tanks co-designer, who eventually caves in and reveals that the tanks primary designer, who recently passed away, requested that his mind is placed into the tank. He further reveals that the tanks designer hated his parents, whose religious beliefs forbade him from seeking the medical treatment he needed while still alive.

With this information in hand, Section 9 assume that the tank is heading to the parent's house. They try and cut of the tank, but they are ultimately unsuccessful. Outside the former designer's parents house, section 9 and the multi-pedal tank do battle. While they are fairly evenly matched, Kusanagi manages to connect directly into the tank and wipe its hard-drive. Kusanagi reveals that while connected to the tank, she could read its mind for a brief second. Kunanagi states that while she can't be sure, she believes the tank designer was not motivated by revenge, but instead he just wanted to show off his new body to mum and dad.

What I liked

In this episode, we got our first look at the full Section 9 team in organised combat. Kusanagi and Batou along with the Tachikomas lead the vanguard, while Saito operates as a scout and sniper.

Their adversary was well equipped to deal with them, but ultimately it was the calculated risk taking of Kusanagi  that saved the day.

What we learned

The most interesting point I learned from this episode is that Batou (pictured on the far right) has decided that one Tachikomi (pictured middle) is somehow different from the rest. Despite extensive testing showing that all Tachikomas share the same memories and are, essentially, identical. Batou is adamant that the one he has picked is special.

Batou has also started giving his Tachokomi 'natural oil' as a treat/reward. Whether this 'natural oil' (whatever it actually is) will have any side effects is yet to be seen.
