Eclipse Phase - A cakewalk at the black lab

‘What’s happening?’ Duncan shrieked. A warm yellow stain spread down his left leg. Another barrage from the high calibre machine gun turrets whinnied. Unable to hear anything but the high pitched ringing in his ears Duncan surveyed what appeared to be the remains of Hobo. ‘He might still be okay, he has to be okay’ Duncan said to himself. Hobo was lying on his stomach, his back looked like it had been put through a meat grinder then quickly fried.

This mission was supposed to be a cakewalk. After getting offside with the law in the last mission, the Fireteam decided it was time to lose the heat with a journey off-world. Before leaving, we had heard of a lab out in the middle of nowhere that solid intel told us was a cover for illegal narc production. The plan was simple, hijack a regular supply freighter, infiltrate the lab (killing any white-coat types that got in the way), and knock off the stash of drugs. The money would be welcome – maybe then we could buy our own ship instead of taking a scum barge?
What we were expecting

The first part of the mission was easy and we soon found ourselves inside the lab. The first infomorph we uncovered was entirely accidental. Slave-bot was clever enough to suggest that taking the lift down to the production facility without surveillance might not be smart. After the camera we sent down got annihilated in seconds, Hobo asked Duncan to rig the lift with explosives. Duncan’s dexterous fingers can work magic when under pressure. With the detonator set to trip when the doors opened – the infomorph really didn’t have a chance.

Abseiling down the lift shaft, we encountered a long hallway with a single exit. ‘Overconfident big dummies’ Duncan cursed – pretty strong words from an 8-year-old. Duncan and the Fireteam waltzed through the exit and found themselves in a large circular room, with 5 narrow corridors evenly spaced. We couldn’t quite see what was at the end of these corridors, but what could go wrong? That’s when we heard it. Starting off like a quiet moan, then hissing into a full scream, two fully automatic high calibre turrets appeared out cavities in one of the corridors.

Duncan can’t quite figure out what exactly happened next, but he does know that at some point Hobo charged the turrets – swords brandished. He didn’t get far. As soon as he had reached the centre of the room turrets opened up from 3 other corridors, quickly shredding the hapless Hobo were he stood. Dr Ock, always the smartest of the bunch, attempted to sneak one of the corridors and hack the turrets – surely a good plan of attack against infomorphs? Unfortunately, the turrets had no obvious access points, and a quick search revealed that they were not networked. Realising his mistake (and displaying a bit of moxie), he just managed to dodge the incoming attack – suspending himself from the ceiling with his eight legs.

Duncan, Slave-bot, and Psych – displaying the most survival sense of all – are currently hold up at the entrance. ‘What the heck are we gonna do’ – Duncan’s said looking to Slave-bot and Psych expectantly. The yellow stain running down his leg was now dripping on the cold floor.
